Some robotics clubs are named after schools. Others pick impressive-sounding words like “Phoenix” or “Titan.” We’re named after… construction tape.
And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
The Moment It Happened
Before Caution Tape Robotics Club existed, Daniel was coaching his very first VEX team. It was time to pick a team name - that exciting moment when you get to create your identity.
The students looked around the room. Their eyes landed on a roll of yellow-and-black caution tape sitting on the table.
“Let’s call ourselves Caution Tape!”
And just like that, a name was born. No focus groups. No branding consultants. Just kids being kids, pointing at what they saw and making it theirs.
Why We Kept It
Here’s the thing about the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation (RECF): they emphasize being student-centered. Everything - from robot design to competition strategy - should be driven by students.
So when it came time to name our club, we asked ourselves: What could be more student-centered than a name students actually came up with?
“Caution Tape Robotics” isn’t polished. It’s not corporate. It’s authentic. It tells the story of curious kids looking around a workshop and finding inspiration in everyday objects.
That’s exactly what robotics is about.
The Logo? Also Student-Designed
Of course, our logo was designed by students too. We shared it on VEX Forum’s legendary “Share Your Team Logos” thread - a post that started back in 2019 and now has over 1,170 replies.
That thread has become one of the longest-running posts in VEX Forum history. Teams from around the world share their creative identities there, and we’re proud to be part of that community.
What’s in a Name?
Every time someone asks about our name, we get to share this story. It reminds us that the best ideas often come from unexpected places - and from the people closest to the action.
Our students didn’t overthink it. They saw something, felt a connection, and made a decision. That’s problem-solving. That’s creativity. That’s the mindset we want to nurture.
The Message Behind the Tape
Caution tape says “pay attention” and “something interesting is happening here.”
That’s us. We’re building robots. We’re learning. We’re making things happen.
So yes, we’re named after construction tape. And we think that’s pretty perfect.
Sometimes the best names are the ones you stumble upon. What’s the story behind your team’s name?
